Our Top 3 Windermere Walking Routes
Friday 5th June 2026
One of the best things about staying at The Westbourne is that some of the most popular Lake District walks begin right on our doorstep.
Whether you prefer a peaceful lakeside stroll or something a little more adventurous, this guide introduces you to three of our favourite walking trails near Bowness that keep our guests returning again and again.
Brant Fell for Panoramic Views Across Bowness-on-Windermere
Walking time: The 3.5 km trail takes approximately 1 - 1.5 hours round trip from The Westbourne.
Just 1.4 miles on foot from our accommodation, Brant Fell is a great option for guests wanting the iconic views that the region is famous for, without committing to a long and demanding mountain hike.
This walking route quickly leaves behind the bustle of Bowness and takes you along the Dales Way and towards the viewpoint at Post Knott. From here, it’s a short uphill walk across before reaching Brant Fell, the summit viewpoint.
On the descent, follow the track north past Matson Ground and back towards Dales Way before finishing your Lake District walk with a well-deserved drink from our guest bar on your return to The Westbourne.
Orrest Head, The Famous Lake District Viewpoint
Walking time: The 4.1 km trail takes approximately 1.5 - 2 hours round trip from The Westbourne.
Orrest Head is often described as the viewpoint that inspired Alfred Wainwright’s love of the Lake District and once you reach the top, you will easily understand why.
It is a short and fairly easy walk to tick off your list, and the paths are well maintained year-round, making it ideal for casual walkers.
Setting off from Windermere Train Station, it only takes 10-minutes to reach the starting point of the out-and-back route which climbs gradually through woodland before opening up to views across Lake Windermere and the surrounding fells. On a clear day, you can even spot the Langdales and Scafell Pike.
For a circular walk, descend via Common Wood, passing Orrest Head Cottage and House before joining the main road at Windermere Village.
Cockshott Point for a Relaxed Lakeside Walk
Walking time: The 1.83km trail takes approximately 30 - 60 minutes depending on how long you stop to enjoy the view.
Not every Lake District walk needs to involve steep climbs or hiking boots. Just a short stroll from The Westbourne, Cockshott Point offers a gentle walk along the shores of Lake Windermere. It is flat with accessible paths and plenty of benches for you to stop and enjoy the scenery.
Top Tip: Pick up a coffee from Dan’s Shack beside the Ferry Nab before setting off, or enjoy a relaxed evening wander after dinner at the Boardwalk Bar and Grill.
These Windermere walking routes are suitable for a range of abilities. Just make sure to wear comfortable, waterproof walking shoes, as woodland and lakeside paths can become muddy and slippery after wet weather.
We also recommend checking the latest weather forecast and trail conditions to help you prepare for your walk.
