How to Plan the Perfect Lake District Weekend Break

Tuesday 7th April 2026

Planning a Lake District weekend break doesn’t need to be complicated. With the right mix of scenery, food and a good place to stay, you can fit a lot into just a couple of days.

Whether you are visiting for the first time or returning for another Lake District short break, this guide will help you make the most of your time around Windermere.

Where to Stay

Location matters when you are trying to make the most of your weekend.

Staying in Bowness-on-Windermere puts you on the shore of England’s largest natural lake, along with a variety of popular destinations to eat and drink, and a range of top local attractions to explore.

It means less time travelling and more time actually enjoying your break.

The Westbourne B&B offers a comfortable and relaxed base, with everything you need close by, including free on site parking and local recommendations to help plan your stay.

Day One: Discover Bowness Village

Start your weekend getaway in Bowness on Windermere with a gentle introduction to the area and make your way to the shores of Bowness.

Head down to the lakeshore and enjoy the views before hopping on a Windermere Lake Cruise at Bowness Pier. It is one of the easiest ways to take in the scenery without rushing. Times and prices may vary at different times of the year.

Spend the afternoon exploring Bowness village and Windermere village. Browse independent shops such as Bath House for artisanal and sustainable crafts, The Northern Line for handmade souvenirs or visit a local gem, Booths just outside the train station.

Stop for a coffee and a bite to eat at Graze Café, where you will find a superb selection of veggie and vegan lunch options. Café Number 4 is another fantastic spot for high quality lunches and cakes.

In the evening, enjoy a relaxed meal at one of the many top-rated nearby restaurants. We recommend Porto for a superb fine dining experience in the heart of Bowness on Windermere or Hole in t’Wall for traditional pub grub and drinks in traditional surroundings.

Popular spots fill up quickly, especially during peak times, so booking ahead is always recommended.

Day Two: Explore the Outdoors

One lake trip is rarely enough on a Lake District weekend break. There are so many more meres and lakes to see and perhaps you want to whiz round to a few more. Take a look at this highly-rated six lakes morning minibus tour for only £32 per person.

The car ferry is available for pedestrians in as little as £1.50 to enjoy a ride across the mere and access to the Claife Viewing Station. Timetables can be found here for running information.

There are plenty of walking routes for all abilities around the village but if you are feeling more energetic, head slightly further out for hill walks and panoramic viewpoints.

Our top favourites include Orrest Head Circular and Brant Fell Circular. Both are walkable from our door step at The Westbourne. If walking is not your thing, you can hire bikes and even try paddleboarding.

The key is to keep it simple. You do not need to cram everything in to enjoy a proper Lake District experience.

Local Attraction Spots

History is a big part of any Lake District short break so enjoy a family day out and find your childhood favourites whilst you step into The World of Beatrix Potter. Enjoy the world-renowned magical experience inspired by stories of Peter Rabbit and his friends, for only £9 per person.

If you enjoy design and architecture, add Blackwell Arts and Crafts House to your list of things to do. Just a 10-minute drive from Bowness, Blackwell is one of the UK’s finest examples of Grade 1 listed Arts and Crafts architecture. This is not to be missed.

Take a short drive to nearby spots where you will find the unique bridge house in Ambleside or head to Grasmere to try some of the world-famous gingerbread at Sarah Nelson’s Grasmere Gingerbread Shop.

Make the Most of Your Stay

A great weekend getaway Windermere is not about doing everything, especially if you’re only here for a few days. The focus lies on doing the right things at the right pace that suits your needs.
